Sunday March 29th 3:23 PM
Well, it has been a while since I have posted anything to the blog. Friday night a week ago, Don Kristi and I were riding in the car coming back from West Lincoln and Don reached up to the map light in the car and turned it on. From the corner of my eye I could tell he was doing something with his right hand but I couldn't tell exactly what. He said, "hey did you notice I flattened my hand out completely on my leg?". I said not exactly although I could tell you were doing something. Kristi leaned forward to see what he was doing and sure enough he was pushing his right hand down flat against his leg. Don said "I have been working on this for days and I finally did it". We were so proud because it is those small things that he works so hard at that we can do and sometimes take for granted. For the third week in a row Don didn't have a good assessment for OT. With PT there was some improvement. I talked with his OT and she said she just didn't understand. It was like she was hitting a brick wall literally with the range of motion and strength in his arm and hand. There is no flexibility when she reaches a certain point with his arm. She thinks that maybe the plates and pins could be restricting it. He is loosing strength in his hands regarding grip too. The OT is just baffled at this because he was progressing so well. Friday night the kids asked us to go out and eat for my b-day (it was Thursday). Kristi, David, Donnie Lee & Taylor met us at Texas Roadhouse in Hickory and we had a ball. We all sat in one booth (it was tight but we did it) and we had a blast. We laughed so hard and just had fun telling jokes and watching the staff line dance. Kristi, Donnie Lee and I wanted to join them. Oh, on Thursday, Don came to the school and brought me balloons just like he promised when he was released from ICU. He had promised me that he would walk in to the school unassisted on my birthday and bring me flowers. It has rained about 4 days here almost non stop. Saturday we just ran around and Kristi went with us. This morning, finally no rain!! It is a beautiful day! It is very windy but that's March for you. But it is about 60 degrees and the sun is shinning. After church and dinner today we had to go to Wal-Mart to pick up a few things. When we were on our way to check out we passed a man and a younger man looking at fishing poles. I noticed the name on his shirt and the company for which he worked. It rang a bell with me but I couldn't think of why. The man favored another relative of Don's by the same name but the company didn't fit for the relative. The younger man made eye contact with us and watched us walk by. It was as if he knew us from some where too. As we continued walking Don said "what was the name of the man that I hit in the accident?". I told him the man's name and the first name matched the name on the shirt. Don said, "Vicki, I think that was him. He works for that company and I think that was him. I am going to go back there and ask him." Don has said that he would go to the man's house someday just to let him know that there were no hard feelings on Don's part. As Don walked up he asked the man is he was so and so and the younger man spoke up before Don could finish and said "you're Don Turner". These were the guys, Dad and son, that were in the truck the night of the accident. The man said he was so glad to see Don walking. He said he thinks of Don everyday and he is so glad that he is doing well. Don told him how happy I was that they had called during his time in the hospital and that it had really meant a lot to us. The man said they had tried to call another time and the hospital said that he had been discharged. Don asked about the truck saying he had heard that there was a big dent in the bed. The dad said yes and that looking at the truck it was amazing that anybody made it out alive. The son said the truck was parked in the parking lot. We continued to talk and all the guys shook hands several times. As we left we neared the garden area parking lot and Don spotted the truck and the guys were backing out of a parking space. It was unbelievable. I am surprised the truck was drivable. The bed of that ford pick up truck was warped so bad. From the tire to the bumper the bed of the truck was smashed in and it was twisted beyond belief. Don said just looking at it made his leg hurt. He said he wanted pictures and would try to get them tomorrow. He just kept commenting on the bed of that truck all the way home. I'm not sure if seeing the truck was a good thing but meeting the man and his son face to face was. Don was very grateful to have had the opportunity to speak to him and let him know that there were no hard feelings on Don's part. Please pray that we find out what has stopped progress with his arm and hands and that this too can be fixed.
